BSME 2-2 Second Semester 2010

BSME 2-2 Instructions:

A. Please attend the lighting of the belen on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, 6PM, at the Freedom Park. Write a reaction paper based on the following:

1. The physical construction of the Belen. Why do you think is the belen situated on the ground and not hanging on the second floor, as practiced in previous years? Describe how you see the belen, The figures, colors, materials used, lighting, etc.

2. What do you think this year’s belen represent? Is the concept socially relevant? Did it show any social issues? How does the belen reflect the values of the PUP community? Explain your answer.

3. Describe the musical numbers and the drama performances. Comment on the songs and style of singing. Comment on the acting, story, props, sequencing, and special effects of the drama.

4. While watching the belen lighting, look around and observe the structures surrounding the belen. Describe the spatial relations among the stuctures such as the Mabini shrine, the obelisk, the stone garden, the PUP main building, etc. Did the creation of the belen respond to the spatial stimulation of these structures.

5. If the class cannot attend the lighting of the belen, just visit the belen the following day and answer item nos. 1, 2 and 4.

B. For your Christmas break, you will have one major project. Each student will come up with a “Personal Aesthetic Journal” which will show the various art forms you experienced during the break. Art forms include songs you listened to, concerts that you attended, plays and movies that you watched, books, essays, poems that you read, paintings and sculptures that you saw and even buildings that you visited. For each of the art form you will provide, in matrix form, the date of the activity, the description of the art work, and your critique of the art work, and your reflections. You may include pictures of the attended activities. The format of the journal is as follows:

To be submitted on short bond paper on resumption of classes in January 2011.

C. In relation to the above journal, you are required to attend the following activities:

1. The Lantern parade in UP Diliman on December 17, 2010
2. Watch at least two Metro Manila Film Fest entry (Please attach copy of ticket.)
3. Watch the Christmas Display at the Greenhills shopping Mall
4. Visit any art gallery (in Megamall, SM North EDSA or any gallery)
5. One classical (choir or orchestra) concert and one modern (Pop, rock, R&B, etc) concert

Reports of the above activities will be include in your Personal Aesthetic Journal.

D. For the officers, please group the class into six groups and assign the the following topics for presentation on January:

1. Visual Arts: Painting and Photography
2. Sculpture
3. Architecture
4. Dance
5. Music
6. Theater/Drama & Film

E. During the break, read and study Estolas et al, Introduction to Humanities Chapters 1-3. Long examination first week of January.
