Humanities Second Semester 2006-2007 [NEW!]

Dear Students of Humanites 110:

I hope by now you have taken hold of our textbook Introduction to Humaniteies (Arts for Fine Living) by Estolas, Josefina, Clarita Javier and Nieves Pada-Payno. There are certain sources where you can buy the book for half the price.

Okay. So here's the catch. Please read Chapters I, II and III. and take note of the following assignments:

1) For those classes who have not finished the first workshop on Art, please bring any object that you may consider as Art. (Special mention to the Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering classes). Please bring the objects every meeting until we actually use them.

2) For our discussion on Chapter Two, you need to do and bring the following. Go to the NALRC. There is an encyclpedia form of book with several volumes on Filipino Culture and Art. I thing the title is Heritage. Please read several entires and choose two. Photocopy the picture of the native art you chose and include a short description and explanation on its contribution to Philippine culture and the arts. Just in case you cannot bring the book out for photocopying, you can use your cellphone to take a picture of the native artwork that you chose. Your last alternative, is to go to old books, maybe on Anthropology or Philippine Culture and take the pictures from those books, or surf the internet and download Philippine native artwork. PLease bring your assignments this week, December 4-8, 2006.

3) For Chapter Three, begin in depth reading and study the information written in this chapter which co-incidentally will be the coverage of the first long quiz.

4) Lastly, I need you to divide the class into eight groups. Each group will be assigned to one of the following topics: 1) painting; 2) sculpture; 3) architecture; 4) music; 5) dance; 6) drama or theater; 7) photography; and 8) film. The topic that will be assigned to your group will be the topic for the group report and the final group project. On a one fourth sheet yellow paper, write the names of the members of your group and the topic that you picked. The secretary will keep the grouping in the meanwhile, and will email me at angsosyoklasrum@yahoo.com and justinvnicolas@lycos.com.

5) Group report - research on the topic assigned you. You will have to present in an interesting way the basic elements and style of the "form of art" assigned to you. A written report is also expected to be submitted on the day that you report.

6) Group project - based on theart form or topic assigned you, you will think of a concept on how to present its classic and the contemporary form. For instance, you might want to do a comparative analysis of the old Kundiman sons and the protest songs of hte 90's and the present. OR compare the style of a foreign painter and a Filipino artist such as Fernando Sena.
The project will be presented as a folio complete with pictures and text. IT will also be presented in class.

That is all for now. The most immediate is the groupings and the assignment on Chapter II or the Filipino native art.

Thank you very much. Life is short. Make the most of it.

She is studying at the UP College of Music, taking up guitar lessons. She is just eith years old and she happens to be my daughter. Thanks for the support.
